TOEFL Registration & Preparation

The test registrations (including costs) as well as test preparations (3 or 10 individual hours) with a specialist are included in the ALL AMERICAN and ELITE packages.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test that is used worldwide by many colleges and universities for the admission of international students. It assesses English proficiency in the areas of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. This guide will explain to you step by step everything you need to know about creating your account, booking the test, preparing, the test day, and sending the results.

1. Creating a TOEFL Account

To register for a TOEFL test, you need an account with ETS. With this account, you can book test dates and manage your test results. Follow these steps to create your account:

  1. Open the TOEFL homepage: Go to the ETS website and click on Create an Account under "NEW USERS."Note: Some browsers are not fully supported. Use Google Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer to ensure all features are available.

  2. Enter personal data: Enter your personal data. Required fields are marked with a red asterisk.

Important:

Make sure to replace umlauts like ä, ö, or ü with ae, oe, or ue, and the ß with ss, as these are not supported in the American system.

  1. Set login credentials: Create a username and a secure password for your access.

  2. Add address information: Enter your home address in full.

  3. Set communication settings: Choose whether you want to receive information by email or SMS.

  4. Add additional information: Fill out fields such as "Native Language," "Citizenship," and "Country of Birth." Then click Continue.

  5. TOEFL Search Service: Select "no thanks" here to avoid receiving any advertising from the USA.

  6. Review and confirm account: Check all your entries before completing your registration.

Note:

After creating the account, please share your login credentials with us so that we can assist you with the test registration and later view your results (depending on the contract).

2. Booking a TOEFL Appointment

Once your account is set up, you can book a test appointment:

  1. Log in to the ETS website with your access data.

  2. Click on "Register for a Test".

  3. Select "TOEFL IBT" and click on Register for this Test.

  4. Choose test center and date: Search for a suitable city and select the desired test date and time.

  5. Review all entries and complete the registration.

Important:

Make sure to select the TOEFL IBT and not the TOEFL Essentials, as the latter is not accepted by most American colleges.

3. Booking the TOEFL Home Edition

If you want to take the test from home, follow these steps:

  1. Select the TOEFL IBT Home Edition: Make sure the correct time zone (CET - Central European Time) is pre-selected.

  2. Choose the time period and the exact date for your test.

  3. Check the time: Select a time between 12:00 and 18:00 to avoid mistakes with the American time (AM/PM).

  4. Confirm the selection and review the information.

  5. Enter your ID number and double-check your name and date of birth.

  6. Again select "no thanks" for the "TOEFL Search Service".

  7. Confirm all data and complete the registration.

Note:

We recommend taking the test at the test center, as there are often technical problems with the Home Edition.

Important:

Pay close attention to the correct time, as the test fee will not be refunded!

4. TOEFL Preparation

Thorough preparation is crucial for a successful TOEFL result. Use the following resources:

  1. Free online resources from ETS:

    Practice tests and preparation material are available on the ETS website.

  2. Individual online courses:

    Depending on your contract, you have access to our preparation courses that will prepare you specifically for the TOEFL. Our tutors will help you achieve the best possible result.

Please let us know if your contract includes additional test preparation or support.

5. TOEFL: Important Notes for Test Day

5.1 TOEFL IBT at the Test Center

  1. Travel time: Allow enough time for the commute and be at the test center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the test.

  2. Technical equipment: All technical devices are provided at the test center, including computer, headphones, and microphone.

  3. Notes: You will receive paper and pen or a whiteboard for notes at the test center. The whiteboard must be completely erased after the test.

  4. Security check: An identity check will be conducted, where your ID and TOEFL registration document will be verified.

  5. Test procedure: The test takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, including a 10-minute break. Follow the instructions of the test staff exactly.

  6. Break regulations: You have a scheduled break during the test, during which you are allowed to leave the room. No additional breaks are permitted.

Important documents and items you need to bring:

What is not allowed:

- Electronic devices (mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.)

- Note-taking materials from home

- Bags, jackets, or hats (must be handed in beforehand)

5.2 TOEFL Home Edition

The test will be conducted in your own room, but also requires strict regulations:

  1. Preparing the room:

    • The room must be quiet and well-lit.

    • No other persons are allowed in the room.

    • The desk must be clear, except for the computer and the permitted note-taking materials.

    • Avoid mirrors or reflective surfaces in the background.

  2. Technical requirements:

    • Computer: Desktop or laptop with Windows or Mac (no tablets, no smartphones)

    • Webcam: The camera must be able to show the entire room (an integrated webcam is not sufficient).

    • Microphone and speakers: Headphones or headsets are not allowed.

    • Stable internet connection: Check the speed before the test to avoid interruptions.

  3. Identity verification:

    • Before the test, you must show your passport or ID card.

    • With a handheld mirror or your mobile phone, you must show the proctor the entire room to ensure that no unauthorized aids are present.

  4. Notes:

    • Only a whiteboard with a dry-erase marker or a transparent plastic sheet with a washable marker are allowed.

    • You must erase the whiteboard before each test section and show it to the camera.

6. Sending TOEFL Results

To send your test results to colleges, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your ETS account and select "Send Additional Score Reports".

  2. Scroll down and click on "Next".

  3. Select the result you want to send.

  4. Search for the desired college and select it as the recipient.

  5. Add the recipient to the list.

  6. For "Department," select your desired field of study.

  7. Confirm all entries and complete the payment.

Note:

You can select up to 4 colleges for free before the test takes place. After that, additional fees will be charged.

7. Rescheduling TOEFL

Rescheduling the TOEFL appointment is possible, but it is subject to a fee. Here's how you proceed:

  1. Log in to your ETS account.

  2. Select the test you want to reschedule and click on "Reschedule Appointment".

  3. Choose a new date.

  4. Confirm the change and pay the $60 fee.

Note:

Rescheduling is only possible up to 4 days before the originally booked test date.
